Bessie May Adams

Bessie May Adams, born on January 22, 1932, in Salmon, Idaho, passed away peacefully at home in Cheyenne, Wyoming, on July 15, 2025. She was a remarkable woman whose life was characterized by hard work, devotion to her family, and undeniable talent.

Bessie began her journey of dedication and responsibility at the young age of 12, and her work ethic did not waver throughout her life. For the majority of her career, she thrilled the students and staff with her culinary skills, working as a cook within the Cheyenne school district. Her passion for nourishment extended beyond her profession, as Bessie cherished preparing large holiday dinners and hosting camping and fishing trips that brought her family together, particularly relishing the joyful energy of her grandkids and great grandkids during Halloween.

With a strong and independent spirit, Bessie lived modestly, forever believing herself to be the richest person in the world due to the love and support she received from her husband and family. She possessed an extraordinary talent for crocheting, having created numerous beautiful pieces, including bedspreads and tablecloths, many of which were adorned with superior awards at the State Fair. Additionally, Bessie held a deep appreciation for gardening, often transforming the fruits of her labor into delicious baked goods and proudly showcasing the beautiful roses she cultivated.

Bessie's profound interest in family history allowed her to connect generations through stories and memories, and her love for animals, especially her beloved cats, brought additional joy to her life. Notably, at the age of 16, she made history as the first female in the Civil Air Patrol in Cheyenne, a milestone that she treasured.

In 1949, Bessie married the love of her life, James H. Adams, Jr., after a whirlwind two-week courtship. Their partnership was one of unwavering love and affection, marked by an extraordinary 72 years of marriage, which continued to inspire everyone around them. The brilliance of their connection was palpable; when they looked at one another, it was a testament to a love that animated their lives.

Bessie leaves behind her loving family, including her daughter-in-law Connie Adams, grandson Jason Adams and his wife Tammy, granddaughter Melisa Mizel and her husband, Michael, as well as James Adams, IV, and his wife Mariah. Bessie will be fondly remembered by her numerous great-grandchildren, including Dalton Mizel, Brandon Mizel, Lucas Mizel (Sasha), David Johnson (Crystal), Taylor Anderson (Josh), Cassie Adams, Sierra Adams, James Adams V, and Billie Adams, as well as many great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson. She is also survived by her daughters Harriet Martin and Linda Ackerson, along with Bessie Leichtweiss (Phil), grandchildren, Linda Kay Ackerson, George Ackerson, Jr., Nova Martin, Carl Martin, Jr., and Patricia Chacon, along with her dear niece Nancy Fletcher (Reid), great-niece Alex Taylor, her nephew David Wensky (Affa), and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

Bessie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James H. Adams, Jr., son James H. Adams, III, parents Otto and Jenny Vajner, in-laws Alberta and James H. Adams, Sr., brother Enrie Vajner, sisters-in-law Helen Clark and Margaret Wensky, brother-in-law Adam Wensky, and son-in-law Carl Martin, and many other loved ones.

Bessie May Adams' legacy of relentless dedication, generous love, and artistic flair will continue to shine brightly in the hearts and memories of all who knew her. She shall be profoundly missed yet fondly remembered for the rich tapestry of life she wove for her family and friends.
