Daniel Zelic Levy, 42, died at the Cheyenne VA Medical Center June 27, 2025 from complications of a long-term condition.

Dan was born March 27, 1983 in Duluth, Minnesota to Neal and Kathie Levy. At age six his family moved to Cheyenne where he attended Lebhart, Fairview, Henderson and Dildine schools, Carey Junior High School and Cheyenne East High School, graduating in the class of 2001.

He enlisted in the United States Army August 1, 2001, finishing basic training three days after 9/11, then serving as one of the “Devils in Baggy Pants” of the 1/504th with the 82nd Airborne Division. He was dropped into the mountainous Pakistan-Afghanistan border for Operation Enduring Freedom, and later served a second tour in the desert during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Ever in the possession of a camera – at that time, disposable/film, then digital – he documented his service time and his surroundings in hundreds of photos.

After military service, Dan worked for a number of local businesses, eventually securing a position as an entry guard at the newly-built Lowes distribution center east of Cheyenne. Later, he went to live with his sister in southern California and began a career as a Rural Carrier for the United States Postal Service, transferring to the post office in Mankato/Owatonna, Minnesota, then to the Cheyenne post office after he returned home. He was very proud of and dedicated to his work for the post office.

Dan was born a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan and also basked in the glorious championship years of the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan. He enjoyed collecting and trading baseball and basketball cards and memorabilia and was a masterful xBox gamer. Dan loved and cherished the companionship of a dozen different great dogs throughout his life.

He is survived by his parents and his sister, MSgt Emily Levy, USMC, Aurora, Co., a nationwide family of uncles, aunts and cousins, and Boston Terrier Wrigley.

To honor Dan and his memory, please support efforts to keep the VA well-funded and well-staffed. We are grateful to the Cheyenne VA and their staff for the volume and expert quality of care they provided to Dan over the last two decades.

Daniel will be laid to rest in the Black Hills National Cemetery on Friday August 22nd, 2025 at 10am.
