David Keith Spencer, age 82, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away at home of natural causes on October 15, 2025.
Dave was born on January 24, 1943 in Terre Haute, Indiana, the son of Keith Donald Spencer and Geneva (née Bishop). David grew up in Terre Haute, completing primary and secondary education in the Vigo County public school system, graduating from Garfield High School - where he played on the football team - before pursuing higher education. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Butler University in Indianapolis in 1965. After college, he worked as a disc jockey for a radio station in Santa Fe, New Mexico, before returning to Terre Haute to start graduate school. Dave went on to obtain a Master’s degree from Indiana State University in Terre Haute in 1967.
In 1969, David and his first wife relocated to Wyoming, where he accepted a teaching position in the newly developed broadcasting program at Central Wyoming College. In 1972 the couple moved to Cheyenne, where David began a career promoting the state’s attractions through the agency now known as the Wyoming Office of Tourism. He wrote and produced the radio series “On Tour in Wyoming,” and later worked in audio and video production. He went on to work as a sales manager at Little America in Cheyenne. Upon leaving that position, he became the sales manager at KMUS 102 radio during its early 1990s peak. He also worked as a copywriter for Sierra Trading Post before retiring.
David was preceded in death by his life partner, Linda Dillon. He is survived by his two sons: Jeffrey (54) of London, United Kingdom, and Tad (49) of Omaha, Nebraska. Having found in Wyoming the outdoor solitude he cherished, Dave was a keen lover of fishing, camping, and exploring the great Wyoming outdoors. He and Linda loved good food and shared many of their favorite recipes with friends and family over the years. In their 30-some years together, he and Linda delighted in extended tours and camping trips, and together they opened their home to many lively, loving, and adorable foster dogs and cats. Dave and Linda were delighted to provide a welcoming haven for stray cats who made their way to the car port and eventually the front porch.
In keeping with David’s wishes, no public memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family invites contributions in David’s name to the Cheyenne Animal Shelter, or to a local animal shelter for those not in Cheyenne.
