Donald Carl Freeman was born on November 24, 1930, in Muscatine, Iowa, passed away on May 21, 2025, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He lived a life rich in purpose and passion, impacting the lives of many as a dedicated educator, photographer, and conservation activist.
A strong presence within his community of Waverly, Iowa, Donald devoted his career to teaching high school History and Environmental Education. His unwavering commitment to the environment was further exemplified by his role as the National President for the Izaak Walton League, where he championed the cause of conservation with a powerful voice that resonated with many. Whether it was through shaping young minds or capturing stunning moments as a photographer—specializing in wedding and senior portraits—Donald left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered.
Donald was not just known for his professional endeavors; he was a man of deep personal kindness. He was gentle, loving, and giving, traits that endeared him to family and friends alike. His personality shone brightly, characterized by a strong presence that inspired those around him to embrace their own passions.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Donald also found joy in his hobbies, which included a collector of duck decoys. These interests reflected his profound love for the outdoors and nature, an aspect of his life that shaped his values and actions both personally and professionally.
Donald leaves behind a loving family. He is survived by his sons Craig Freeman (Jane), Scott Freeman (Martha), and Steven Freeman (Catharine); his daughter Pamela Okland (Mark); and his granddaughter Johnna Wise (Bryson), as well as grandson Zachary Okland (Kayla) and granddaughter Lacey Fleming (Matt). He also cherished his three great-grandsons, Logan, Stefan, and Micaiah Wise, alongside two great-granddaughters, Everly Fleming and Marisol Quintana (Orlando) and four great-great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Freeman; his father, Carl Freeman; his mother, Lucile Freeman; and his sister, Charleen Wilson.
As we remember Donald, we honor a life dedicated to education, community service, and a deep love for nature and family. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him.
