Dr. Donald Lee Jones, a devoted family man, esteemed professional, and passionate traveler, passed away tragically in a car accident on August 11, 2025, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He was born on December 26, 1932, in Buffalo, New York, to Viola and William Jones, both of whom predeceased him.
Dr. Jones dedicated his life to the fields of engineering and construction, beginning his career with Turner Construction Company in Chicago before moving on to Raymond International Inc., where he worked across various states including Illinois, Texas, Georgia, and Massachusetts. In 1971, he took a bold step by founding his own engineering and construction firm, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit. He later sold his business in 1979 to focus on overseas development through Jocaro Trading, an endeavor that highlighted his commitment to expanding his horizons and making a mark in the industry.
Dr. Jones was a proud veteran of the US Naval Reserve since 1949. In 1953 he was active duty and served 2 years as an air traffic controller. Honorably discharged in October, 1955. He remained active in the reserves program until 1960.
His educational journey was marked by determination and excellence. Dr. Jones graduated from the University of Florida in 1959 with a Bachelor of Building Construction Degree after receiving an Associate Degree in Applied Science from the University of New York. His pursuit of knowledge continued as he undertook doctoral work in Business Administration with a focus on Industrial Engineering at Pacific Western University.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Jones was a proud advocate for his beliefs, actively participating in local political matters such as his candidacy for the Alachua County School Board in Gainesville, Florida, where he garnered significant recognition. He embraced his Republican views with pride and engaged in discussions with vigor.
An avid traveler, Don was known for his adventurous spirit and love of exploration. He often shared tales from his extensive travels throughout America, Europe, and the Caribbean, showcasing his ability to connect with people wherever he went. He was a devoted fan of his beloved University of Florida Gators and cherished the times spent with family, often taking to the open road in an RV alongside his wife, engaging in Work Camping adventures across the nation. Whether it was enjoying life in casual attire or cruising the open seas, Donald embraced each moment with warmth and enthusiasm.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his daughters, Helaine V. Murphy, LeAnn A. McCann, Paula R. Competelli, and son David L. Jones, along with son-in-law Terrence J. McCann, granddaughters Lily Competelli and Taryn Murphy, grandson Devin, and great-granddaughter Sofia Murphy. His thriving family remains one of his proudest accomplishments, reflecting the love and kindness he instilled in them throughout his life.
Dr. Donald Lee Jones will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for his generous spirit, love of storytelling, and sincere connections with family and friends. His legacy of adventure, laughter, and dedication will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.
