Doris Jane Popejoy, 95, passed away on May 7, 2026, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, following a brief hospitalization, with her daughters and sons-in-law by her side.
Doris was born on November 3, 1930, in Stamford, Nebraska, to Walter and Vera (Hopkins) Willey. She was the third of five children. Though her early years were not easy, she shared a close and enduring bond with her sisters—Wilma, Arlene, and Dorma.
She graduated from high school in 1949 and later completed business college in 1956. Doris settled in Springfield, Missouri, where she began her career as a bookkeeper.
In 1960, a blind date arranged by her friend and roommate, Reba Craine, led her to meet the love of her life, Ron Popejoy. They were married on April 8, 1961, beginning a devoted partnership that would span more than three decades.
Doris and Ron made their home in Hugoton, Kansas, where Ron worked in the oil field alongside his father. They welcomed their first daughter, Seena, on May 15, 1962, followed by their second daughter, Laura, on June 19, 1966. The family later moved to Gillette, Wyoming in 1968, and then to Douglas, Wyoming in 1974, where they raised their daughters. Doris remained in Douglas until 1999. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper at Irwin’s Furniture, where she was known for her dedication and reliability. Ron preceded her in death on January 2, 1997.
In 1999, Doris moved to Johnstown, Colorado, to be closer to her daughter Laura and her family. She lived there until 2021, when she relocated to Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Doris was a woman of many talents and passions. She was an accomplished quilter, creating more than 100 quilts throughout her lifetime and earning numerous awards at county fairs. She was in many clubs and groups where she shared her love for quilts, dolls and playing games. She also had a gift for gardening, with a remarkable ability to nurture and grow just about anything. In the kitchen, she was known for her baking—especially her cherished tradition of making cinnamon rolls every Christmas, a memory her family will hold dear.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ron; her parents; and her sisters. She is survived by her brother Donald of Foresthill, California, daughters, Seena Spencer (Duane) of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Laura Morrison (Ed) of Thornton, Colorado. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Kristin Jardien (AJ) of Arvada, Colorado; Jen Cummins (Spencer) of Longmont, Colorado; Amanda DeLawyer (Ben) of Aurora, Colorado; and Eric Morrison (Erin) of Parker, Colorado. Doris was a proud great-grandmother to eight great-grandchildren: Zayn, Ellie, Wesley, Emma, Hudson, Evan, Emry, and Enzo, each of whom brought her great joy.
Interment will be at the Douglas cemetery on May 14th at 11:30am in a private service for family and close friends.
A memorial service will be held on May 23 at 11:00 a.m. at Schrader, Aragon and Jacoby Funeral Home, 2222 Russell Ave, Cheyenne, WY 82001. In honor of Doris, who never cared for black, guests are encouraged to wear bright, joyful colors to celebrate her life.
Doris will be remembered for her love for family and friends, her creativity, and the kindness she showed in everyday moments.
