Ernest "Ernie" Torrez, a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and grandfather, peacefully passed away on May 10, 2026, in his hometown of Cheyenne. Born on June 22, 1949, Ernie's life was a testament to hard work, dedication, and love for family.
Ernie’s journey began in Cheyenne, where he was raised by his parents, Porfirio and Lily Torrez. Throughout his life, he maintained a deep connection to his roots and those who loved him. Though his parents have passed on, the spirit and values they instilled in him lived on in the man he became.
Ernie embarked on a career filled with steadfast commitment and pride. For 14 years, he worked as a Switchman/Brakeman for Union Pacific, a role that showcased his diligence, reliability, and work ethic. His skills and attention to detail also led him to drywall finishing work with Gypsum Estates, where he exhibited his craftsmanship. Culminating his professional life, Ernie took on the responsibility of Head Custodian for the Laramie County School District. In parallel with his work, he earned a Certificate in Construction Technology from Laramie County Community College, reflecting his desire to grow and improve his trade.
Known fondly as Ernie to those close to him, he was cherished not only for his impressive work ethic but also for his great sense of humor. Family and friends often remembered his lighter moments, where his wit could brighten any room. Above all, Ernie took immense pride in his work and his role in nurturing his family.
His greatest joy came from spending time with his children and grandchildren—a role he embraced wholeheartedly. As a loving father to Cindy and Joey, and as a devoted husband to Norma, Ernie’s legacy lives on in the close bonds he nurtured and the fond memories he created. He is also survived by his siblings, JoAnn, Esther, and Gilbert, who carry forward the family’s love and unity.
The kindness, humor, and hard work that defined Ernest Torrez remain a beacon of inspiration to all who knew him. His passing leaves a profound silence but also a rich legacy of love and dedication that will endure in the hearts of his family and community. Ernie’s life reminds us of the quiet strength found in commitment and the enduring power of a devoted heart. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
