Gerald “Jerry” James Wood

June 27, 1931 — August 13, 2025

Cheyenne, WY

Gerald “Jerry” James Wood, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, after a courageous battle with dementia. He was born on June 27, 1931, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and lived a life rich with his unwavering dedication to family, community, and service.

Jerry was detail-oriented, generous, and dependable. Known for his calming presence, he made his family feel safe amidst life’s storms. Every morning, Jerry would start his day early, whistling “Zip a Dee Doo Dah” and other cheerful tunes throughout the day, infusing warmth and light into the lives of those around him. His dry sense of humor and even-keeled demeanor, combined with the patience of a saint, made him a steadfast source of support for his loved ones.

With a remarkable work ethic, Jerry balanced two jobs while completing a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at the University of Omaha in 1962. After graduation, he relocated his family from Council Bluffs to Pine Bluffs, Wyoming. For over 30 years, he worked as an accountant for the Rural Electric Association (now High West Energy), where he mentored many co-workers, leaving behind a legacy of guidance and encouragement.

Jerry was deeply engaged in his community. He served on the school board, was an elder at Grace Lutheran Church, and was actively involved in organizations including the Jaycees and the Liona Club. As a coach of Little League and a mentor in Boy Scouts, he shaped the lives of many young people. Jerry’s contributions also extended to sports, where he kept statistics for high school sports and the Trail Days Teenage Rodeo. Well into his 80s, he maintained an active lifestyle playing basketball at 6 am, skiing, snowboarding, inline skating, bowling, and golfing.

A devoted family man, Jerry attended hundreds of events for his children and grandchildren, traveling across the country and capturing memories through thousands of photographs. His faith was deep and strong, allowing him to establish connections with many and easily make friends wherever he went.

Jerry is survived by his loving spouse, Barbara Wood; daughters Cindi Hill (Randy), Pam Wood, and Nicki Tucker (Chuck); sons Jim Wood (Patty) and Lincoln Wood (Jenn); 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and sister Sandy (Fred) Westphal. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Blanche Wood; siblings Donna Schultz and Dick Wood; wife Marcia Wood; son Phillip Wood; and grandchildren Lisa Jo Welch, Eric Wood, and Gio Tucker.

Jerry’s legacy of compassion, encouragement, and love will continue to resonate within the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, and his spirit will forever remain a source of peace and inspiration.
