Jerry McKinney, 77, of Laramie, Wyoming, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 26, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family and friends.
Born on July 8, 1947, in Yuma, Arizona, Jerry was the son of Chuck and Phyllis McKinney. He grew up in Laramie and graduated from Laramie High School in 1965. Shortly after, he left to serve his country in Vietnam. He was brought home early on a compassionate reassignment following his brother’s accidental death as the last surviving son—an act that marked both the sacrifice and deep love that defined his life.
On Friday, June 13, 1969, Jerry married the love of his life, Lynda Jacobson, in Laramie. The two began their journey together in California, where Jerry worked in highway construction. They returned to Wyoming in 1975 to help care for Lynda’s ailing brother and chose to remain in Laramie to stay close to family. Earlier this month, Jerry and Lynda celebrated 56 beautiful years of marriage.
Jerry was a hardworking, selfless man whose life revolved around his family. His quiet strength, steady presence, and unwavering devotion made him the heart of his home. He led by example—through his work ethic, his humility, and his deep care for those around him.
Jerry’s greatest joy in life was being “Papa” to his grandchildren. He was a proud and devoted grandfather who rarely missed a school performance, sporting event, or birthday celebration. In his free time, he loved nothing more than camping and boating with his family—making memories that will be cherished for generations.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lynda; his sons, Marty (Ashley) McKinney of Laramie and Chris (Shauna) McKinney of Castle Rock, CO; and his adored grandchildren: Mayson, Macy, Brooklyn, Teagan, Rowan, Lilyana, and Axton. He is also remembered fondly by many extended family members and lifelong friends.
Jerry was preceded in death by his siblings, Mike and Judy; his parents, Chuck and Phyllis; and several other cherished relatives.
We invite Jerry’s family and friends to honor him at a brief service on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at First Christian Church in Laramie, followed by a luncheon.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that you consider a donation to Laramie Girls Softball (PO Box 1603, Laramie, WY 82073 or Venmo @LGS-Softball). Jerry was proud to help build their indoor practice facility and remained a dedicated supporter of the program’s growth.
