It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mrs. Gloria June (Hurst) Stewart, 86, of Cheyenne, who passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, June 25th, 2025. Gloria was born in Denver, CO on March 5, 1939 to Dr. Richard Harold Hurst and Georgia Ella (Daniels) Hurst. She graduated from Colorado State University where she met the love of her life, Dr. Lauren “Mark” Stewart. After graduating from college, Mark and Gloria were married on March 18, 1961 in Denver and were happily married for 60 years. They moved around a fair amount during the early years as their family grew until finally settling down in Cheyenne where Mark served as a USDA Veterinary Epidemiologist. Mark’s work took him far and wide and Gloria was always quick to jump at the opportunity to join him. Their love for travel and adventure extended to their personal lives and they visited much of the world together, including a two-year stint in Somalia in the 1980’s. Mark and Gloria had three children together, Deanna Kay, Pamela Sue, and Richard Jack.
Gloria was a very happy, upbeat person who seemed to always see the sunny side of life. She was a very gifted artist and craftsperson who was well known in the community for her magnificent wedding cakes, specialty cakes, and sugar Easter Eggs. She had an ability to use piping bags unmatched by others and used them to create detailed, delicate and beautiful decorations of all sorts. Gloria was also an amazing painter of scenic oil paintings and she made exquisite hand painted items, including Christmas ornaments, for those she loved. Gloria was especially proud of her family and she was selfless with her love and devotion for her children and all the grandchildren and great grandchildren who followed.
Gloria was an avid bridge player, playing weekly for most of her life. She had a love for everything colorful and was rarely seen without her bright clothes and vibrant jewelry - which matched her personality perfectly. Gloria was a great listener who was always there to offer her love and support. When one thinks of Gloria words like happy, gentle, loving, kind, colorful, radiant, and beautiful immediately come to mind. She was a terrific host who loved family gatherings and was thrilled when they grew to include extended family and friends. We are fortunate to have many cherished memories of her as she always made sure the family was together for every occasion imaginable, be it birthdays, holidays or just because. Gloria made everyone feel special and there are no words to describe the extent of our loss. She will be missed dearly but remains in our hearts and memories forever.
Gloria is survived by children Deanna Thomas (Jay) of Lakewood, CO and Richard Stewart (Shannon) of Cheyenne; her brother Douglas Hurst of Denver, CO; grandchildren Joshua Brendle (Janelle) of Cheyenne, Porsha Traipoon of Cheyenne, Ashley Thomas of Lakewood, CO, Riley Stewart of Cheyenne, and Sean Thomas of Lakewood, CO; along with 3 great grandchildren Soren Traipoon, Ava Brendle and Raina Brendle all of Cheyenne; nephews and nieces Barbara Willoughby (Randall) of Cheyenne, Robert “Bob” Taylor (Erin) of Casselberry, FL, Erik Hurst (Jaquita) of Denver, CO, Julie Kaupp (Matt) of Littleton, CO, Judith “Judy” Bailey of Parachute, CO, Robin Starr of Glenwood Springs, CO, Kim Chaffee (Mike) of Silt, CO, and Jane Batten (Joe) of Louisburg, KS.
