Obituary

Gordon D. Oberg, 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 19, 2026 at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center. Gordon was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

Gordon was born on August 20, 1932 in Grafton, North Dakota to Dalmar and Sophia (Hartje). Gordon grew up on a farm five miles from Hoople, ND and attended grade school in Hoople. Growing up on a farm, Gordon was required to perform many tasks due to his father having MS. At the age of nine, Gordon could be found operating a tractor or driving loads of grain to the elevator.

At 12, Gordon and family moved to Grand Forks, ND, where he graduated from Central High School. Gordon then attended the University of North Dakota and received both a Bachelor of Education and Master of Science degree there.

Gordon married his high school “dream,” Lois Schwam, on July 14, 1951. The couple was devoted to each other and to Christ, raising their children to know the Lord. Gordon attended and served at various churches in the Cheyenne area.

Gordon began teaching Industrial Arts/Technology in Osakis, Minnesota in 1954. Two years later, Gordon moved to Cheyenne to teach at Carey Junior High. Gordon retired in 1993 after thirty-eight and a half years as a teacher. In 1972, he represented Wyoming at the National Association of Industrial Arts as outstanding teacher of the year.

Gordon and Lois loved to travel and visited 49 states and 27 different countries. Shortly after celebrating 60 years of marriage, Lois passed away on August 21, 2011. In the final years of his life, Gordon enjoyed spending time with good friends and family members and traveling with family. He was a generous philanthropist, donating to various causes that include the Cheyenne Botanic Garden, Cahill Park, and the Cheyenne Children’s Museum as well as various anonymous donations to churches and missionaries.

Gordon was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Oberg. He is survived by two sons, Bradley Oberg and wife, Jean, of Cheyenne, and Brent Oberg and wife, Beth, of Centennial, Colorado; two daughters, Karen Curtis and husband, Bob, of Douglas, Wyoming, and April Orndorff and husband, Tim, of Centennial, Colorado; thirteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. at North Christian Church with Pastor Matt Snyder officiating. Visitation will be private, as will interment in Beth El Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy in Gordon’s memory may be made to the Paul Smith Children’s Village, Cheyenne Botanic Garden, 616 South Lions Park Drive, Cheyenne, WY 82001.
