Obituary

Lozetta (Louie) "The Sarge" Liebenow passed away on January 27, 2026 in Cheyenne, WY, surrounded by his family. He was born January 26, 1943 in Pittsfield, MA to Leslie and Doris Liebenow.

He was always known for his patriotism and considered himself lucky having served 21 years of active duty in the USAF and 21 years as a JROTC teacher. He had varied and interesting assignments and activities while on active duty which spanned through the offices of seven presidents (Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan). His Air Force time was spent in administration with assignments in Niagara Falls, NY, Thailand during the Vietnam War, a special task force in Eglin Air Force Base in FL, the Secretary of Defense Office at the Pentagon in Washington DC, NATO Headquarters (AFSOUTH) in Naples, Italy, and as a First Sergeant at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, WY. Upon retirement from active duty, he was excited to be hired as an Air Force JROTC instructor at East High School in Cheyenne, WY. His specialty was teaching leadership. His drill team won many awards. He kept in touch with many of his former cadets and was so proud of their accomplishments having some who became commanders, instructor pilots, US Marshals, etc.

He met the first love of his life, where he married Marguerite in 1962 and they shared 20 years of marriage with their two children, before her passing. He then met the second love of his life, Shirley in 2001. They married in 2004. Both marriages were filled with love and laughter. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He cherished spending time gardening and was an excellent cook and baker. He and Shirley were avid travelers and loved spending winters in AZ. He was a pillar of strength to those around him. As a military man and teacher, he was respected for his work ethic, knowledge, and ability to connect with others. His former JROTC cadets often speak of the positive influence he had on their lives.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, his children Doreen and LisaMarie, his grandchildren, Amanda, Thomas, and Tiffany, and his great grandchildren, Cayden, Josephine, Isabella, Jackson, and Weston. He was preceded in his death by his parents, his brother Beverly, and a long time friend he thought of as a brother, Lloyd Gritton. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 30 at 2:00 p.m. at Schrader Funeral Home in Cheyenne, Wyoming. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ZERO Prostate Cancer (zero cancer.org).
