Merlin Otto Marquart, fondly known as Otto, passed away on September 4, 2024, at the Western Nebraska Veterans Home in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Born on December 9, 1939, in Deshler, Nebraska, Otto lived a life enriched by his adventurous spirit, warm-hearted nature, and a profound love for family.

Otto dedicated many years to shaping young minds as a junior high science teacher in Northglenn, Colorado, where he brought his great sense of humor and engaging personality into the classroom. His students were drawn to his stories, filled with laughter and wisdom, often recalling tales from his childhood and his four years of service in the Navy aboard the USS Lake Champlain as a dental technician. Every interaction with him felt like a treasured memory, as he had an incredible ability to connect with people, encouraging them to open up and share their own stories.

A man of diverse interests, Otto relished the thrill of auctions, where he delighted in bargaining, hunting for wrecked cars to fix up, and tackling building projects. He approached life’s challenges with enthusiasm and determination, embodying an adventurous spirit that inspired those around him.

Family was everything to Otto, and his legacy continues through his daughters: Ingrid Einspahr (and husband Jeff) and Rachel Nelson (and husband Ken). He took immense pride in his grandchildren: Eric Einspahr (and spouse Alecia), Ryan Einspahr (and spouse Sonya Virgil), Kaia Nelson, and Jay Nelson, each of whom brought joy to his life in unique ways. Otto was also blessed with great-granddaughters Reagan Einspahr, Emilia Einspahr, and Evelyn Einspahr, who were cherished sources of love and laughter. He is also survived by his beloved second wife, Doris (Winkler) Marquart.

Otto was preceded in death by his first wife Mary Marquart, along with his father Otto Marquart, mother Blanche Marquart, and brothers Gary and Ronald Marquart. Their memories will undoubtedly live on through the stories and love that Otto shared so generously with those fortunate enough to know him.

The world is a little dimmer without Otto’s presence, but his adventurous spirit, quick wit, and loving heart will forever be remembered by family and friends alike. His legacy serves as a reminder to find joy in every moment and to embrace life with laughter and love.

There will be no memorial service but in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Western Nebraska Veterans Home activities department, located at, 1102 West 42nd Street, Scottsbluff, NE 69361.
