Michael Edward
Gress
April 1, 1954 – June 3, 2026
Michael Edward Gress, known warmly to many as Mike, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, at the Life Care Center in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Born on April 1, 1954, in Prosser, Washington, Mike’s journey through life was marked by a blend of hard work, family devotion, and moments of genuine sweetness that left indelible marks on those who knew him.
Mike’s early years were filled with the rhythms of rural life, and he found great joy working as a farm hand—something that truly resonated with his heart. One can imagine him, as a young boy, digging potatoes alongside his sister, the earth beneath his fingers connecting him to the land he cherished. He found satisfaction in many roles throughout his working life: making French fries in a factory, driving trucks, and delivering flammable CO2 containers to convenience stores and restaurants—a job he enjoyed for the sense of purpose it gave him. These varied occupations reflect a man who was not afraid of hard work, nor limited by circumstance.
Though his formal education ended around the tenth or eleventh grade—school never fitting well with his spirited nature—Mike’s life lessons came through lived experience. He was known to be stubborn and quick-tempered at times, yet those close to him would attest to the warmth and sweetness that emerged when he was in a good mood, revealing a complex and deeply human spirit.
Fishing and shopping trips to Costco or Sam’s Club were among the simple pleasures Mike enjoyed, moments of escape and delight in ordinary things that brought happiness and connection. These small joys, like the tenderness shared around a donut on payday during his youth in Quincy, Washington, spoke volumes of the love he held for his family.
Family was integral to Mike’s life. He is survived by his beloved sisters—Ginger (Al) Fiedler, Jan Flournoy, and Eileen Daniels—and his youngest brother Vernon. These relationships were a source of strength and comfort through the years. He also leaves behind the legacy of his older brother John, his middle sister Carolyn, and their parents, John Gress II and Verna Gress, all of whom have preceded him in death.
One of the most poignant memories shared among his family was forged during a difficult time—after Mike underwent surgery for a broken femur and hip. Before his transfer to Life Care for rehabilitation, on Ginger’s birthday, Mike shared his ice cream with her. Though he was physically vulnerable, this act of sweetness represented a deep bond and a moment of pure love that Ginger cherishes forever.
As his health declined, Mike battled dementia for several years and faced serious illness in his final days. The circumstances surrounding his passing bring a measure of peace, knowing his struggle has ended and that he has “gone home to the Lord,” as his family believes and holds dear. It was of great importance to his loved ones that Mike was saved. Nurse practitioner Ashley, a compassionate presence at his side, read the sinner’s prayer to him. Though Mike could no longer speak or repeat the words, he was ready—to find peace, salvation, and rest at the journey’s close.
Mike’s life is a powerful testament to resilience, love, and the strength found in family. His story is woven with moments of laughter, stubborn defiance, sweetness, and an enduring connection to the land and people he loved. He will be deeply missed but always remembered for the remarkable man he was: a son of Prosser, a worker of the land, a brother, and a soul finally at peace.
Rest in peace, Michael Edward Gress. Your legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved you.
