Patrick Daniel Stewart, fondly known as Pat to family and friends, and affectionately dubbed PD by his fellow veterans, embarked on his final peaceful flight on Veteran's Day; November 11, 2025, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, following a courageous two-year battle with illness. Born on February 27, 1935, in the heart of Columbus, Georgia, Pat’s journey through life was nothing short of extraordinary, shaped by a resilience that endured even the harshest of winds.
His early years were marked by humble beginnings, growing up in a family that navigated the struggles of poverty. Pat’s mother, a beacon of strength, worked tirelessly across two jobs to provide for her two sons, instilling in them the values of tenacity and ambition. These lessons served him well as he ascended from the confines of the wrong side of the tracks to become a renowned aviator, fueled by an unwavering spirit and a commitment to achieve.
Pat's military service commenced when he became a Naval Aviator in 1959, a role that saw him rise above the clouds during the tumultuous times of the Vietnam War. After concluding his Navy career in 1965, he transitioned into his next great adventure as a Commercial Airline Pilot for Continental Airlines. Over the course of 18 years, he flew passengers and after that he transitioned to cargo transportation, flying to fascinating corners of the globe, embracing every new experience. Among the remarkable cargo he transported were research snails, and his greatest charges were the majestic whales. Most memorable perhaps were his last flights, carrying a colony of 50 penguins, showcasing his keen sense of humor and love for the extraordinary.
Pat’s post-Navy canvas was painted with more than just flying; it was adorned with a rich tapestry of knowledge and passion. He was an avid reader, a champion speller, and a proud alumnus of Florida State University, where he nurtured his love for music on a scholarship while earning a Bachelor of Science in Geography. His Southern accent, practiced daily and carried around the world, was a cherished connection to his roots, nurturing friendships wherever he went. Known for his warmth, Pat was larger than life, effortlessly inviting camaraderie from strangers and painting smiles wherever he landed. His fondness for babies was particularly endearing; they sensed his gentle spirit and warmth.
In addition to his pilot wings, Pat carried his faith as a guiding compass throughout his life. A devoted Catholic convert, he cherished his time with the Knights of Columbus and the Band of Brothers Service at Our Lady of Fatima in Colorado, immersing himself in community, service, and brotherhood. His faith was a cornerstone of his character, shaping his interactions and the love he shared with others.
Finding solace in the great outdoors, Pat indulged in hunting and fishing—embracing every moment spent in the embrace of nature. His move to Wyoming in August 2024 heralded the realization of a long-cherished dream. He reveled in the splendor of Lake Powell and the breathtaking vistas of the Tetons, relishing his newfound home as a sanctuary.
Pat leaves behind a legacy woven from threads of love and pride. He is survived by Karen Stewart, his beloved wife of 63 years; Janet Nord, his cherished daughter; and grandsons Daniel Nord (Sada) and Luke Nord (Clarissa), who carry forth his spirit of adventure and love. He is preceded in death by his father, Frederick Stewart; mother, Eunice Stewart; son, Thomas E. Stewart; brother, Thomas Stewart; and son-in-law, Matthew Nord.
His life's journey may have drawn to a close, yet the indelible memories of Patrick Daniel Stewart, a man who soared above the clouds and touched countless lives, will forever remain aloft in our hearts. As his spirit joins the great expanse of the skies he so adored, he leaves behind a legacy of courage, love, and joy that will echo through the lives of all who knew him. May he rest in peace, ever loved and forever celebrated.
