Robert Eugene
Funk
October 31, 1945 – May 1, 2026
Robert “Bob” Eugene Funk passed away May 1, 2026, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, surrounded by his family. He will be remembered for his steady presence, quiet compassion, and the many lives he touched.
He was born October 31, 1945, in Scott City, Kansas, to Herman and Nella Funk. Raised in western Kansas, Bob carried with him the values of hard work, humility, and perseverance throughout his life.
After graduating from Scott Community High School in 1963, Bob answered his nation’s call when he was drafted into military service and completed basic training at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. His courage and capability led him to Panama, where he served with distinction as a drill sergeant, jungle expert, and instructor, preparing fellow soldiers for Vietnam through rigorous jungle warfare training. In these formative years, Bob embodied discipline, resilience, and leadership-qualities that would continue to define him throughout his life.
After returning home, Bob met Anita Hoeme. They were married on August 15, 1970, and built a life together. They raised two children, Robert and Adrienne. Bob was a devoted father who coached his son and other young athletes in youth baseball, sharing not only his knowledge of the game but a sense of fairness, discipline, and respect. His children remember his steady guidance, his humor, and the occasional stubborn streak that made him unmistakably himself.
Bob pursued higher education at Fort Hays State University, where he earned both his bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in counseling psychology. His academic accomplishments became the foundation for a remarkable career as a certified trauma specialist. Over the years, Bob dedicated himself to helping countless individuals, families, and veterans navigate their deepest wounds. He possessed a rare gift: the ability to see beauty in the broken. This extraordinary compassion made him not only an exceptional therapist, but a beacon of hope for many who had lost their way. His work was shaped by a sincere belief in the worth and dignity of every person he met. Many have reached out to share how much his care and guidance meant to them-a reflection of the lasting impact he had.
Bob’s appreciation for restoration extended beyond people. He was an avid collector, fascinated by history, craftsmanship, and forgotten treasures. He found joy in refurbishing antiques, breathing new life into worn relics much as he did with the human spirit. He delighted in conversations about guns, bows, metal detecting, ancestry, and books. Yet despite his many passions, Bob remained a quiet, kind, and private man whose greatest joy was found in the company of his family.
He is survived by his wife, Anita; his son, Rob (Blen) Funk of Overland Park, Kansas; his daughter, Adrienne (Tate) Janssen of Lawrence, Kansas; and his treasured granddaughters, Isabel Janssen, Abigail Funk, and Layla Funk. He is also survived by his brothers, Larry (Sharolyn) Funk of Garden City and Kelly Funk of Scott City; and his sister, Sheila (Roy) Boyd of Modoc, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Nella Funk, and his sister, Judy Kitch.
In the hearts of those who knew him, Bob’s legacy endures: a gentle soul, a wise counselor, and a man who truly saw beauty where others saw only brokenness. He will be missed and remembered with love-for his kindness, his humor, and the spark of orneriness that never left him.
A private family celebration of life will be held.
Memorials may be sent in care of the funeral home.
I salute the light within your eyes where the whole universe dwells. For when you are at that center within you and I am at that place within me, we shall be one. —Crazy Horse
