Obituary

Robert Leo Racette, a dedicated and honorable man whose life was marked by service, family devotion, and a profound love of reading and football, passed away on April 8, 2026, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Born on September 9, 1940, in Ishpeming, Michigan, Robert's journey was defined by steadfast commitment and adventure, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege to know him.

Robert’s life of service began with four years in the United States Marine Corps, setting the foundation for a career marked by dedication and discipline. Following his time in the Marines, he proudly served 22 years in the United States Coast Guard, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CWO4). His military career was not only a testament to his personal resolve but also established the adventurous spirit that shaped his family’s path. After retiring from active duty, Robert continued to contribute his skills and work ethic in civilian life, bringing his expertise to Gator Industries and later VanDiest Trucking.

An alumnus of Nagaunee High School, Robert loved to spend his leisure time immersed in reading, cheering for football, and enjoying the company of his family and beloved pets. Those close to him remember him as a man who provided a life filled with adventure for his family—a true military family through and through. Above all else, Robert’s love for his family radiated through all aspects of his life, reflecting his proudest accomplishment: the profound and enduring care he showed to those dearest to him.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ellen, who shared life’s journey with him; his children Stacy Cole (Mark): and grandchildren Ashley Toutant (Steven), River Schroeder (Samantha), along with great-grandchildren Miika Toutant, Anyana Toutant, Neela Toutant, Ember Toutant, and Reed Schroeder. He is also survived by his in-laws Roy Morton (Marilyn), Helen Point (Dale), and Peggy Heinrich (Tom), Georgia Oliver (Denny)  who held a special place in his heart.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Vivian Asguaard; father, Leo Racette; stepfather, Iver Asguaard; and sisters Norma, Barbara, Florine; as well as by his mother-in-law Maggie, and father-in-law Conard.

A memorial service to honor the life and legacy of Robert Leo Racette will be held on April 17, 2026, at Cheyenne Baptist Temple, located at 1621 E Pershing Blvd, Cheyenne, WY 82001. The service will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by a second gathering at 12:00 p.m. Immediate family and friends will then proceed to Cheyenne National Cemetery at Hildreth Rd, Cheyenne, WY 82009, for a burial ceremony starting at 2:00 p.m.

Robert’s life embodied a spirit of unwavering dedication—to country, family, and the simple joys that enriched his years. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him, a reflection of a man who loved deeply and served with honor. May he rest in peace.
