Steven T.
Smith
Apr 28, 0958 — Aug 7, 2026
Lieutenant Colonel Steven T. Smith, PE., age 68, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away August 7, 2026, from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Originally from Opelika, Alabama, Steven dedicated 22 years to the United States Air Force, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He then transitioned into civil service, where he served for another 19 years. Throughout his distinguished career, he completed multiple overseas assignments and received numerous commendations for his service to his country. He held a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, as well as bachelor’s degrees in electrical engineering and education with a major in math and a minor in physics, all from Auburn University.
Steven dedicated his life to two things: his family, and the Air Force. Steven was a man of service, integrity, and an extraordinary sense of responsibility. He was thoughtful, and often assumed the best in people, extending grace even when others might not have.
He was a man who could work long after most people would have stopped, always finding one more thing that needed to be done. His favorite Bible verse perhaps explains him better than any description could, “Whatever you do, work at it with all of your heart, as working for the Lord” Colossians 3:23). He had a sincere desire to do what he believed was right and to take care of those around him, always giving more than he took himself.
He leaves behind a legacy that is defined by duty, service, perseverance, and responsibility; qualities which were deeply woven into his character. Whether serving his country, providing for his family, or simply taking care of what needed to be done, he gave his whole heart to the responsibilities he believed were his to carry.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Helen Romine Smith, as well as his four children, Wyatt, April, Dawson, and Logan, his 10 grandchildren, and his sister, Barbara Rodgers. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Alice Smith, and his brother Mike Smith.
A quiet interment will be held by his surviving family in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
