Obituary

Willie James Johnson, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, Marine, and mentor, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2026, at the age of 69, surrounded by those who loved him.

Born on August 15, 1956, Willie lived a life defined by service, discipline, and genuine kindness. A proud United States Marine, he carried the values of honor, courage, and commitment not only in uniform, but in the way he lived every day. He believed deeply in earning respect through actions and holding oneself to a higher standard, lessons he instilled in everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Beyond his military service, Willie was a lifelong martial artist and teacher, earning a prestigious place in the U.S. Martial Arts Hall of Fame. He helped build confidence, discipline, and resilience in countless students while strengthening the bonds of the family he created along the way. He had a rare gift for connecting with people, able to turn strangers into friends and make everyone feel seen and valued.

Above all else, Willie was a family man. He was the rock his family leaned on for guidance, humor, and steady reassurance. His advice, encouragement, and unwavering presence shaped generations, and his legacy will live on through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who will carry forward the values he worked so hard to pass down.

He is survived by his loving wife, Vi Johnson; his children Joseph (Val), Jessica, James (DeDe), Scott, Mino (Nicci), and Nikko; his 32 grandchildren; and his five great-grandchildren, who loved him dearly. He is also survived by his brothers Jesse Johnson, Richard Pafford and his sisters Betty, Paulette, and Annette. He was preceded in death by his sons Jearamie and Pale, his daughter Angel, his parents Mack Sr. and Hattie, his brothers Mack Jr. and Christopher, and his sisters Jackie and Vanessia. In addition Eddie Newman, who grew through the Martial arts became a brother to him.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 2:00pm, preceded by a viewing, starting at 1:00pm. In honor of Willie, attendees are respectfully asked to wear white or military attire.
